Talk aims to improve the financial literacy of Guernsey’s young people
28th March 2025Drawing on their own experiences of becoming financially independent, four graduate analysts from the Guernsey Financial Services Commission gave a talk to Blanchelande College sixth form students last week.
The talk, which coincided with Global Money Week (17-23 March 2025) – an OECD initiative to improve the financial literacy of young people, covered key financial terms, budgeting, debt awareness, savings and investments, as well as financial scams and the rise of financial influencers or “finfluencers”.
Kathryn Bowley, Assistant Director in the Banking and Insurance Division, said: “Being financially literate and having a general understanding of debit, credit, savings and the financial products available provides a foundation for young people to help them better plan and manage their financial futures.
“We would like to thank the Blanchelande College staff and students for welcoming us, and hope that the talk, which was developed and delivered by some of graduate analysts who have recent experience of going to university and starting their careers, will benefit them as they consider life after school.
“We welcome the opportunity to speak to students from other senior schools in the Bailiwick about financial literacy and the things they may wish to think about as they prepare to go to university or start working.”
The Commission’s Graduate Development Programme is a two-year full-time and salaried programme designed to give graduates with a degree in any discipline and school leavers, an introduction to a career in regulation, and is designed to lead to a permanent analyst role on completion.
